It was another strong weekend for Blueharts Hockey Club, with commanding wins, battling draws, and plenty of goals across all sides.
Blueharts Men's 1s travelled to Harleston Magpies 1s — always a tough place to go — but came away with an excellent 2-0 win. The opening exchanges were even, with the home side edging the midfield battle, but Blueharts’ pace up front made the difference. Ben Bayley opened the scoring before half time, then doubled the lead from the penalty spot after great work from Flyn Krishman. The defensive unit of Tom Russell, James Byford, Rob Baxter, and man of the match Ollie Patmore stood firm to secure the first clean sheet of the season and another three points.
The Ladies’ 1s continued their impressive form with a hard-fought 2-1 home victory over Saffron Walden 1s. After a dynamic warm-up led by the returning “Shingle Queen” Jay Livermore, the Blues executed a solid game plan and made good use of a deep bench to secure three points against close league rivals. A slick cross-field pass from Caz Kumar found Lucy Nissen, who drove into the D and finished confidently to give Blueharts the lead. Nissen then doubled her tally in the second half, winning and converting a penalty flick with precision into the bottom corner. In a fiercely contested game featuring cards for both sides – including one for the opposition coach – the Blues held firm for a 2-1 win. Nissen was named player of the match by a single vote as Blueharts moved up to second in the league, just two points off top spot.
The Ladies’ 2s had a gritty 1-0 home victory over Saffron Walden 2s, seeing the Blueharts side deliver a performance full of determination and composure. Blueharts dominated possession early on and were rewarded just before half time when Carly Madders slotted home a superb short-corner strike. In a tense second half, the team defended superbly under pressure, with player of the match Ally Antoniou controlling the midfield and setting the tone for a disciplined, hard-fought win.
The Men’s 2s played out a thrilling 5-5 draw away at Hertford 2s. After falling behind early, they turned the game around with first-half goals from Rory Williams, Addison Scott, and James Morris. Williams and Scott both doubled their tallies in the second half, but a last-minute Hertford equaliser meant the points were shared in an end-to-end encounter. Rory Williams took man of the match honours for his all-action display and two goals.
The Ladies’ 4s earned a solid 0-0 draw away to Letchworth 3s, continuing their strong start to the season. Both sides created opportunities, but Blueharts’ organisation and defensive strength shone through, with player of the match Georgie Morey outstanding at the back. The team looks ahead to their next fixture full of confidence after another resilient display.
A commanding 5-1 home win over Hertford 3s showcased the Men’s 4s at their best. Goals from Joel Davey (2), captain Matt Maylin, Charlie Moore, and Cam Hone capped a fluent attacking performance. Man of the match Davey impressed not only with his brace but also his composure in midfield as Blueharts controlled the game from start to finish.
The Ladies’ 5s continued their excellent form with a 3-1 home win over Saffron Walden 4s. Blueharts’ goals came from Abbie Johnson, Niamh Hartley-Matthews, and Izzy Marshall in a confident and cohesive performance that underlined the team’s growing momentum this season.
The Men’s 5s produced a blistering attacking display in their 6-0 home win against Royston 2s. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell led the way with a hat-trick of short-corner strikes, supported by goals from Dan Kench, Hayden Haywood, and Frederick Baxter. Relentless attacking play and clinical finishing left Royston with no reply in a statement victory.
The Ladies’ 6s enjoyed a superb 3-0 away win over Letchworth 5s in a fast-paced, end-to-end contest. Debutant and player of the match Lottie Nyemecz opened the scoring before Hannah Ross added a deft deflection. Imogen Ryden sealed the result in the second half as Blueharts’ pressing and teamwork proved too strong for the hosts.
The Men’s 7s’ unbeaten run came to an end with a 3-1 home defeat to Saffron Walden. Darren Francis scored Blueharts’ goal, while debutant U14 Sam Orviss-Hammond impressed as man of the match. U16 Thompson Brown earned Blue of the Week for his energy and encouragement. Despite the result, it was another committed performance full of effort and spirit.
Blueharts Men’s 8s maintained their unbeaten start with a 3-2 away win against Hertford 6s. After conceding twice early, they rallied strongly, with Zac Thomas scoring a hat-trick — including two in the second half — assisted by Tom Payne and debutant Frank Stout. The victory keeps Blueharts 8s top of the division with four consecutive wins.
A weekend packed with determination, teamwork, and goals — great performances across all teams as the season momentum builds.
