Blueharts Hockey Club continued their strong early-season form with a series of impressive wins, battling performances, and plenty of goals across the board.
Blueharts Men’s 1s maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a commanding 5–1 win over Old Loughtonians 2s. The hosts started brightly, with in-form striker Ben Bayley opening the scoring, before a sweeping move from wing-back to wing-back set up Matt Gardner for a far-post tap-in. Bayley added his second before half time to make it 3–0.
Old Loughts made life difficult by sitting deep, but Blueharts broke them down with a superb team move finished by Flynn Krishman. The visitors pulled one back from a short corner, but stand-in captain James Byford restored the margin with a well-struck drag flick through the keeper’s legs. A dominant performance and another three points — setting up a big clash next week against Pelicans.
The Ladies’ 1s battled to a hard-earned 2–2 draw against Bishop’s Stortford 2s. After trailing 0–1 at half time, Stefan’s tactical words inspired a strong response. Jay Livermore levelled the score with a superb drag flick from a short corner, before Natalie Gibbs drove skilfully into the D and set up Harriet Marsh to deflect home for 2–1. In a tense finale, Stortford equalised from a series of late short corners. Player of the Match went to Gibbs, with out Star going to Anna Page.
The Ladies’ 2s showed great resilience to come from behind in a thrilling 5–4 win against Bishop’s Stortford 3s. Goals from Josie Layton and Rosie Ross kept them in touch at half time before an own goal, a smart finish from Layton after fine work by Kiki Arellano, and a decisive short-corner strike from Carly Madders completed the turnaround. Emily Frenay earned Player of the Match, with honourable mentions for Sophie Featherby. The win keeps the 2s firmly in the mix near the top of the table.
The Ladies’ 4s extended their unbeaten run with a confident 3–1 win over Bedford 5s. Blueharts struck twice in the first half — Alice Winton finishing a fine move down the left, and Tamzin Wright showing composure in the D to double the lead. Bedford pressed hard after the break but found Hollie in fine form between the posts. A smart short-corner routine between Wright and Joanna Floor sealed the third. Elsie Burston took Player of the Match honours after a superb all-round display, with strong defensive contributions from Hatty Hoskins, Becky Graves, and Sarah Neal.
The Men’s 5s continued their impressive run with a 7–2 win over Bishop’s Stortford 5s. Oscar Galliford led the scoring with four goals, supported by a brace from Harry Sampson and a late strike from Ed McGregor to round off a dominant display. A strong all-round team effort, with Max Bond and James Moore making impressive debuts.
A determined performance saw the Ladies’ 5s edge a 2–1 win over West Herts 4s. Jenny Burr opened the scoring after sustained pressure, but the hosts hit back before half time. In the final moments, Niamh Hartley-Matthews calmly converted a penalty flick to secure all three points and continue the team’s strong run.
The Ladies’ 6s produced a dominant display in an 8–1 victory over Berkhamsted & Hemel Hempstead 4s. Francesca Woolley’s hat-trick earned her Player of the Match, while Annabelle Holder’s thunderous strike from the edge of the D won Star Moment. Annabelle Horne and Pedzisai Gororo both added braces in another excellent all-round performance. Credit to Berko for their battling effort and second-half goal, and thanks to the supporters who braved the wet and windy conditions to cheer the team on.
The Men’s 7s fell just short in a 1–0 defeat to West Herts 5s. Blueharts enjoyed good possession and created multiple chances but couldn’t find a way through. West Herts netted the winner midway through the second half from a quick break, and despite late pressure and several short corners, Blueharts couldn’t convert. U16 Max Whitley was named Player of the Match for his tireless midfield display, while George Raynor earned Blue of the Week for stepping up out of position for the team.
Blueharts Men’s 8s continued their superb form with a 1–0 win over Southgate Adelaide 2s. Despite dominating possession, Blueharts couldn’t find a way through until captain Rob Trotter pounced on a loose ball in the D to slot home the winner. A seventh straight victory leaves them nine points clear at the top of the division — a remarkable run of consistency and composure.
Another weekend packed with goals, teamwork, and determination — Blueharts continue to shine across all levels.
